That's a big wheel and a small rotor! I'd complain more about that mismatch than a large wheel arch opening...

Looks like math, checks out

That's what confuses me about these lifted "crossover activity fun" vehicles. They give it a lift, but throw low profile 19" tires on them.....

Do you have the picture without the lines on it?

The lift is supposed to make you feel better than the people who bought shorter cars.

Why should X be greater than Y? Does a crossover need bigger brakes for some reason?
It's daft that the tyres are so low profile, perhaps, but what's the relationship to the brakes?

Ah, so it's also raises your self-esteem.
Do you think they have a button so it can be adjustable?
![]() 01/13/2015 at 11:44 |

No it should be as static as possible.
What does this say about people who drop their car so low they can't enter their driveway without a series of ramps?

Adjustable self-esteem? Awesome. I'm turning mine to 11.

Does a crossover need bigger brakes for some reason?
Nothing needs bigger brakes. We need smaller wheels.
I think it's ridiculous to put bigger wheels on a car just to make customers feel like they're ballin'. The added low profile tires on a "activity crossover sedan" are (to me) equally as silly.
I picked those two measurements because if X was bigger than Y, we would have less of this.

I agree about the rim size. I just don't see how the brakes are relevant to the argument. Or do you also object to excessive Y in any situation?

I hate excessive Y from the factory. It's unnecessary. My bitching was never about the brakes.
Dear manufacturers,
Put the brakes on the car that you think are suitable, then put a wheel on it that will clear the caliper
If you feel the car needs 15" disks, then you can put a bigger wheel on it.

Hmmn. But is there any performance-related reason to do it? Other things being equal, a bigger overall wheel diameter is better, isn't it?

Thanks.
Is this better?
![]() 01/13/2015 at 12:40 |

Much better. But I was thinking more like this.
![]() 01/13/2015 at 12:48 |

Are you talking about total circumference (wheel+tire) being better for performance, or just the wheel?
![]() 01/13/2015 at 12:50 |
|
Total, yes.
![]() 01/13/2015 at 12:59 |
|
No.

And what's wrong with that, apart from the weight and practical issues with turning, suspension, etc? Larger overall circumference means lower rolling resistance and a more comfortable ride.

You must have misunderstood my gripe. The total wheel diameter was never the issue.
However, now that your brought it up, I'm curious to hear more about the lower rolling resistance with a larger circumference vs unsprung weight and the energy spent rolling that weight.

"The total wheel diameter was never the issue."
I thought you were complaining about the brake-to-wheel ratio. So I asked whether there was any performance reason they ought to be in proportion, or if it's just stylistic.
"I'm curious to hear more about the lower rolling resistance with a larger circumference vs unsprung weight and the energy spent rolling that weight."
I'm pretty certain that weight is far and away the biggest factor there. Which is why I said 'other things being equal'.

I'm not sure I know how to reply any more, so I'll start over.
